What Is The Community Known For?
Today, there’s no doubt that fishing is the heart and culture of this community, making it known for amazing charter boat fishing trips. Destin also claims to have the largest fishing vessel fleet in Florida. This city has roughly 14,000 full-time residents. Recognized as one of the top 10 most popular beaches in the United States, it’s truly a beautiful place to call home.
Area Attractions
Destin Harbor Boardwalk
When you think of restaurants and a plethora of things to do, the Boardwalk has it all. If you want to take in a dolphin cruise, go parasailing, snorkeling, or, of course, fishing, then the Boardwalk is your destination. If you want to take a stroll on the Boardwalk and have lunch or dinner, you’re covered there, too. How about shopping? Guess what…the Boardwalk has it. From Jet Ski to kayak rentals, the Boardwalk is at the center of the many things to do in Destin.
Crab Island
Crab Island is a sandbar infamously known as the place to see marine life up closer and personal. You can rent a boat, pontoon, kayak, or wave runner from the Boardwalk to get there, and it takes about 10 to 20 minutes, depending on where you rent your vessel. This unique little island got its name because it looked like the shape of a crab before a hurricane covered the land with emerald waters. Now, tiny little crabs live there, and you will most likely encounter dolphins and seabirds.
Restaurants and Nightlife
Destin has plenty of restaurants to choose from. Below are just a few of the fantastic choices.

McGuire’s Irish Pub
McGuire’s is known for its fabulous steaks and one-dollar signed bills covering the ceilings and walls. This place opened in 1977 in a small neighborhood pub but moved in 1982 to their current location, which was the original 1927 Pensacola Firehouse. The Destin location opened in 1996 with the same feel and Irish entertainment as the original. It has a saloon-type, turn of the century feel, and it’s located across from the Harbor Boardwalk.
Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse

Brotula’s Seafood House and Steamer
Remember when we mentioned the Harbor Boardwalk and all the restaurants? This family-owned restaurant is located right in Destin Harbor. The name comes from a locally caught fish called the Bearded Brotula, and it comes from the depths of 350 feet. They have many steamed and broiled shellfish platters and are known for their snow crab, lobster, and mussels.
Schools and Education
There are three schools for your child or children’s educational needs: Destin Elementary serves grades PK-4 with 924 students, Destin Middle School serves grades 5-8 with 760 students, and Destin High School serves grades 9-12 with over 265 students. Destin High has smaller classes with a beautiful campus. All of these schools are part of the Okaloosa County School District.
History
Destin’s rich historical heritage dates back as early as the seventh century A.D., where American Indians inhabited the area. Leaping forward several hundred years, a New London, Connecticut fisherman named Leonard Destin settled here between 1845 and 1850. Since the fishing was plentiful, he decided to build a house and call the area home for himself and his family. For decades, Captain Destin fished the waters of the Choctawhatchee Bay, the bayous, and the East Pass, which is the only passage to the Gulf of Mexico between Panama City and Pensacola. With the overabundance of fish in these waters, Destin has earned the slogan, “The Luckiest Fishing Village in the World.”
